ASTM A572 Grade 50

Superior Steel Supply inventories, distributes and processes a wide range of carbon as rolled plate. ASTM A572 gr50 plate typically comes in a range of 3/16” up to 4” thick and can be procured widths of 48”, 60”, 72”, 84”, 96” and 120” wide with various lengths. Standard lengths are 96”, 120”, 144”, 240”, 360” and 480”. Plate thicker than 4” can be procured in ASTM A572 grade 42 up to 6”.

Plate can be produced at the mill in the as rolled condition or can be leveled from coil. Coil thickness ranges generally include 3/16” to ½” in all the widths above expect 120” wide and can be leveled to custom lengths. Plate produced domestically in the as rolled condition can accomplished by Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) mills that use 95%+ post-consumer recycled scrap, by integrated mills that use iron ore, cooked coal (coke) and limestone or by a rerolling mill that is buying semi-finished slabs from other sources.
High strength plate is commonly produced in ASTM A572 Gr50, which has a higher yield point than ASTM A36. With increased strength, some manufacturers or construction companies can achieve the same strength as ASTM A36, but in thinner sections. Grade 80 and Grade 100 options also exist and are popular in the transportation industry to maintain strength with thinner sections, thereby reducing weight and increasing payloads.

Plate is generally used in the wide array of steel applications including construction, infrastructure, structural fabrication, bridges, mining, energy, transportation, equipment and MRO (maintenance, repair and operational).
Plate is a popular selection for use in the above applications as they are commonly plasma cut, flame cut, laser cut, drilled, formed, welded and can be industrially coated.
